The Diagnosis and Management of Mesothelioma
It is common knowledge that long term exposure to toxic compounds is a potential health risk that can cause permanent organ failure or even premature loss of life. Mesothelioma is among the numerous diseases linked to prolonged contact with hazardous materials. It is caused by asbestos that induces the build-up of a protective membrane of mutated cells around internal body organs like the lungs and heart.
Unfortunately, asbestos is commonly inhaled in job environments.
Wrong diagnosis of Mesothelioma, is however, not common especially when the heath history of the patience is not known. Some possible sign of a Mesothelioma case are chest wall pain along with abdominal swelling, short breath, unusual weight loss, blood disorders and waste discharge difficulties.
Nonetheless, medical imaging techniques such as the x-rays, CT scans and MRI are the ones often used to give undisputed visual evidence indicating presence of the malignant cell lining that causes Mesothelioma.
After Mesothelioma is suspected, diagnostic tests are carried out by using microscopic examinations of chest tissues to see whether the tissues produce the malignant cells.
Localized stage which is level I or II is when the protective malignant membrane is found on the affected organ like the kidney while the advanced stage referred to as level III and IV is when the malignant membrane spread throughout the body.
A few of the treatment regimes used to manage Mesothelioma include chemotherapy, surgery, immunotherapy and radiotherapy. Patients with localized Mesothelioma level I and II often receive radio and chemo therapy to eliminate and prevent further development of cancerous cell.
Where patients have advanced Mesothelioma at level III or IV, malignant membrane removal surgery, chemotherapy and radiation will be applied to increase the patient’s chances of recovery. In some circumstances, patients receive immunotherapy to reduce the mass of the tumor.
