Astrology signs are fascinating subjects. One wonders how the qualities were determined
originally. Perhaps it was through generations of observing characteristics of people born
under the sign and charting characteristics carefully.

SUN SIGNS

The first grouping of the astrology signs is simply imaging the night sky as a 360 degree
circle divided into twelve equal parts. The astrology signs?called the Sun signs-are named for
the major constellation in that segment of the circle, specifically, in order: Aries (the Ram),
Taurus (the Bull), Gemini (the Twins), Cancer (the Crab), Leo (the Lion), Virgo (the Maiden),
Libra (the Scale), Scorpio (the Scorpion), Sagittarius, (the Archer), Capricorn (the Sea Goat),
Aquarius (the Water Bearer), and Pisces (the Fish).

GROUPINGS

Within the twelve sun signs are further breakdowns of characteristics. For instance the signs
are divided into two groups, or Dualities, by whether they are masculine astrology signs or
feminine astrology signs. The masculine astrology signs are Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra,
Sagittarius and Aquarius. The feminine astrology signs are Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio,
Capricorn and Pisces. The intuitive reaction to some of the feminine signs particularly might
be one of confusion.

The twelve astrological signs are divided into four groups of three signs each (triplicities)
by assigning an ”Element? to each sign. The four elements of the ancient world were Fire,
Earth, Air and Water, so the signs were distributed amongst the elements as Fire signs: Aries,
Leo, Sagittarius; Earth signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn; Air signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius;
and Water signs: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Again, one wonders why the water carrier is an
Air sign while the scorpion is a Water sign.

Quadruplicities distribute the twelve astrology signs into groups of four each by their
”Quality?. The Cardinal astrology signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. The Fixed
astrology signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. The Mutable astrology signs are Gemini,
Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. With the above distribution, no sign has the identical
Duality, Element, and Quality as another sign.

POLAR OPPOSITES

One other major grouping exists of viewing the twelve astrology signs in the night sky as
being exactly opposite in characteristics as the one 180 degrees around the circle.
For example, The Aries sign is focused on oneself while the Libra sign is characterized by
sharing and working with others. The Taurus sign desires personal possessions while its
opposite, Scorpio, is more interested in sharing possessions and passing on one’s legacy.
The Gemini sign is able to express one’s innermost feelings and thoughts, while the
Sagittarius sign is content just to philosophize about a subject. The Cancer sign is focused on
home life, and balanced by the Capricorn sign which is devoted to public life. The Leo sign
touts personal indulgence and its polar opposite is the Aquarius sign which tends to be
idealistic and focused toward the needs of the group. Finally, the Virgo sign views hard work
as the way to improve oneself and its polar opposite is Pisces which can often get caught up in
dreams and wishful thinking.
